Perennial plant of Europe and America having racemes of white or purplish flowers and intensely bitter trifoliate leaves; often rooting at water margin and spreading across the surface. Synonyms: bog myrtle, buckbean, marsh trefoil, Menyanthes trifoliata, water shamrock.
